As an architecture graduate, I had the desire to do a lot of woodwork. When this opportunity presented itself, I chose to study painting and finishing works as that is the career choice that I would want to pursue. The one-month technical training helped me see the various aspects of finishing work. The trainers took a special interest in our dedication to the training and the work that we have demonstrated, that they are giving us jobs in their small business. I have seen that being handy as an architect is crucial not only to be able to perform various tasks but also for design consideration of construction finishing.

The Urban Center was able to effectively conduct the selection and management of over 50 artists, host multiple networking and skill training events, exhibit the work of the artists for one week, and promote the program well on digital platforms. Despite the unforeseen circumstances of the pandemic, The Urban Center delivered an excellent execution of the program from beginning to end. We are grateful for our decision to outsource the task for The Urban Center as the team was responsive to communications with the British Council team and has been able to report back on the evaluation and monetary of conducting the process.

The journey from learning how to cut and install aluminum to registering my own business has been a great experience for me. With the knowledge I received in the BRIDGES program, I have been able to submit a proposal for access to finance, which I am still waiting for. It is a great learning experience.

I joined the BRIDGES program as an aluminum trainee and later took business development workshops. Today, I own and manage Soliana Dejene Building Construction. The aluminum training helped me manage subcontractors effectively, while the business development training taught me key skills like employee management and running a successful business. I learned to handle conflicts professionally and prioritize work. The business proposal training was particularly valuable, and I can see significant progress in my ability to present my work confidently to financial institutions, backed by my experience and determination.
